“I commissioned David and Angela to design the exhibition architecture for the National exhibition Fashionably Early at the Gallery of Australian Design (GAD). The exhibition was exploring innovative sustainable practice in fashion schools around Australia.

The design brief had some tricky parameters: we could not attach anything to the walls or ceiling, materials had to be 100% recyclable and our budget was tight. Working with David and Angela was a pleasure, they are great communicators, experimenters and problem solvers, they took our thinking of what this could be to a whole new level. The final architectural solution was a free standing cardboard envelope, standardised for production in a box factory, it arrived flat packed and unfolded beautifully inside the gallery.

“Building a new home for our family of five is a huge investment, and we really wanted to get it right. As lovers of nature, we wanted a house that would sit gently in its beautiful bushland surroundings at the old Stromlo Forestry Settlement.

Studio203 came up with a great concept of three cascading pavilions that follow the slope of the land. We have always loved Mid-Century Modern architecture, and they brought that vibe to life using modern, sustainable materials like exposed glulam beams.

Throughout the whole design process, Studio203 helped us visualise the spaces using 3D modelling and virtual walk-throughs, which made it so much easier to see how the house would feel.

“My original architect passed away mid-project, and I asked Studio203 to step in to handle my Victorian home extension in Stanmore. They managed the transition with immense respect, while successfully transforming the architectural design into a home I truly love. They beautifully integrated a few of his signature details, like the brass-lined door openings and colour-contrast plywood joinery, but elevated other aspects of the interiors, like the kitchen design, to perfectly suit my style.

“As a busy family of two adults and two teenagers, we urgently needed more space to accommodate both parents working from home, as well as the addition of a much-needed second bathroom. We wanted a solution that would make everyday family life easier without wasting valuable space or compromising the functionality of our property.

Studio203 impressed us with their ability to look at our property creatively and identify an under-utilised area that could be transformed into a highly practical addition. Their thoughtful design cleverly accommodates both a new studio and a bathroom, with access to the bathroom from both the main bedroom and the studio. “Our site is in quiet cul de sac in an established Canberra suburb, which had been heavily affected by the Canberra bush fires. Studio 203 explored a series of options that maximise privacy, sun and views across Canberra. We think the selected design will work nicely with the falls across the site and has our main living areas above the level of the street but with easy access to the rear garden.
